Q: What is the Parent Teachers Association (PTA)?
A brief history
The Parent Teachers Association (PTA) started at a National level with the creation of the National PTA. The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer association working exclusively on behalf of all children and youth. The first official meeting of the National PTA was on February 17, 1897 . Over the next 100 plus years, the National PTA has promoted the education, health, and safety of children, youth, and families. Kentucky became a member of the National PTA in 1918 and helped the movement take hold and grow throughout the United States . At the end of the 2005-2006 school year Kentucky PTA represented 400 local PTAs/PTSAs with a state membership of 110,000.
Q: Why do we exist?
The purpose of the PTA is:
- To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship.
- To raise the standards of home life.
- To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
- To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.
- To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.
Q: Who are we?
We are parents who are share the gift involvement in our children's education. The majority of PTA members are parents. The PTA is an organization that works directly with Harmony Elementary school principal, Traci Harris, to help promote education programs, health and safety programs, school legislation and curriculum and school community programs for our children. Please join us by volunteering today!
Q: What has the PTA spent their money on so far?
The goal this year is to purchase a computer lab and a climbing wall. The PTA supports and supplements the school's budget in many ways, but those two are the "big ticket" items we are targeting this year.
Q: How do I get involved in the PTA?
Meetings are held at the school on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. You may also call any member of the PTA board with questions about becoming involved.
